The Stony Plain Eagles opened the first round of their round 1 NCHL playoff series on the road in Wetaskiwin against the Longhorns on Friday night.
The Eagles got off to an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Nick Leyer and captain Chad Hohmann. The Longhorns scored late in the period, sending the Eagles to the dressing room with a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.
A five-goal second period would deadlock the teams 4-4 heading into the final frame. Zane Avery and Eric Perneel both scored for the Eagles.
Just when you thought it couldn't get any more intense, both teams scored three times in the third period, setting up overtime in the first game of the 2026 playoffs. Alex Marrocco, Kye Buchanan and Ryan Berry hit the back of the net for the Eagles.
The Longhorns capitalized on a powerplay in the extra frame, giving the Longhorns an 8-7 win and a 1-0 series lead.
Game two goes tomorrow night in Stony Plain, with puck drop at 7:45pm at the Glenn Hall Arena!
