For the first time in the 2016/2017 season your Eagles hosted the Rosetown Redwings at Glenn Hall Centennial Arena. The arena was full of fans from both teams and the energy in the building was very noticeable.
The Eagles tried to set the pace early, winning the first faceoff but they found themselves playing defence much of the first period. Rosetown kept the pressure on and with a beautiful feed from Derek Leblanc, Justin Bernhardt put home the one timer to make it 1-0 Wings. It took the Eagles a while to respond but with eight minutes remaining, and with a frantic pileup in front of the net Richard Kelly put the puck past Taran Kozun to tie the game 1-1. Following that goal the physical play increased, and the need for the next goal was apparent from both teams. The Eagles generated many chances but were unable to beat the Rosetown goaltender for the remainder of the period. The Redwings goaltending and stingy defence dominated the storyline of the first period.
The second period started much like the first with the Eagles struggling to get the puck out of their zone. Only a minute into second the Redwings scored a quick goal to make it 2-1. Playing catch up throughout the second and not being able to score on the opposition goaltender, the Eagles struggled to be the dominant team like they were in the first. The Redwings really put pressure on with six minutes remaining when Derek Leblanc managed to score on the Eagles goaltender, Travis Yonkman. With the score now 3-1 in favour of the away team, the Eagles needed some energy to get back into it. They were able to do so with just over a minute remaining when Colton Hayes scored and gave the Eagles the lifted boost they needed going into the third. Following 40 minutes the Eagles found themselves in a 3-2 hole and needed to regroup with only 20 minutes to go in the game.
After a good pep talk from both teams’ coaches, Rosetown and Stony Plain came out guns a blazing in the third period. The physical play and aggressiveness increased as well as the chances to score. Goaltending from both teams became the story in the third and this was evident when the Eagles own Branden Kosolosfsky stole the puck from a Rosetown defencemen and had a breakaway, only to be stopped by Kozun. Not even a minute later a much similar play happened, and Kosolosfky was robbed by Kozun once again, this time he used the paddle of his stick as he reached back to rob the Eagles forward. The Eagles were gaining energy from the crowd as the third continued on and they were desperate for a goal to tie the game., but that goal never came and Rosetown’s Elliot Peterson scored late in the third to put the Redwings up 4-2. The Eagles in a last ditch effort to get back even pulled their goaltender around the two minute mark. Despite the Eagles pouring on the pressure, Rosetown stopped all attempts and were able to add an empty netter to make it a 3 goal deficit. That is where the scored stayed at the end of the third, 5-2 for the Redwings.
It was a game filled with many chances and if not for the outstanding performance by Redwings goaltender, Taran Kozun the Eagles may have scored more than they did. The amount of penalties was also a problem for the Eagles as they were penalized eight times, including a 10 minute misconduct. The Eagles will host the Portage Cottage Voyageurs on December 3rd, once again at Glenn Hall Centennial arena.
